Short Story Craft

A short story is a snapshot, not a full life. That is its power.

Start close to the end. Short stories do not have room for long setup. Begin at the moment of change.

Limit the cast. Two or three characters is plenty. Too many dilute the focus.

One central conflict. A short story does not need subplots. It needs one thing that matters.

End with a revelation. Not a twist, but a shift. The character sees something differently. That is the story.

Cut the first paragraph. Most writers take too long to start. Your real beginning is often one paragraph in.

A short story should feel complete. It ends, and the reader feels the click. That is the craft.
